Chateauguay Community Church

Herbert Osborn Nickerson

Aug 7, 1924 – June 9, 2006

While still attending Evangel Pentecostal Church in Montreal in the late 1960’s, Herb at his home on 35 Circle Park started a bible study group in his basement which eventually had to move to another location because of its growth. By the mid 1970’s and still growing, a church was formed called Chateauguay Pentecostal Church and through the years and a few more relocations renamed to what it is called today, Chateauguay Community Church.

Most of us will remember Herb at church, a valuable member on the Steering Committee and as Treasurer of the church for many, many years. He was a fine example of spiritual leadership.  Herb was a reminder to us all of being a faithful Christian. Herb was a man full of wisdom and knowledge of the word of God. If ever you didn’t know a scripture verse you just need to turn to Herb and he’ll have the answer, in fact he had an unbelievable memory for just about everything. But did you know that his love for the bible earned him a PhD. in Bible Theology. Now it makes sense as to how he had every verse memorized, he just loved the word of God. He was an active member of Gideon’s since the 1950’s right up till about a few years ago when he could no longer attend meetings. Both he and Jean were members of the board for Gideon’s in this area, Herb as Treasurer and Jean secretary for the Ladies Auxiliary. Herb was always donating money to all kinds of different Christian needs as well.

Herb served in WWII. He served as a communications officer and he had his turn as well guarding the prisoners. He earned two medals during his service. One of Herbs job as radio communication was to memorize pages and pages of code names, which he did. His sister Philippa even remembers to this day his service number… F58325.

Herb had a long career at CIBC. Starting in Nova Scotia and eventually moving to Montreal to work he spent 42 years in the vault in the sub-basement in the Bank of Commerce building, never complaining, never seeing daylight, but never complaining. Even after his retirement the bank called him back to help train other employees.

Some of us got to know Herb as a permanent fixture sitting on the benches in the mall while Jean shopped. And if he lost track of her there would always be someone there who would tell him, “Oh I just say her, she’s in this store or that store” and Herb would just sit waiting some more. And if you didn’t see him there, there was always a good chance you would meet up with them both at Chateau Restaurant, front booth so they can say hi to everyone passing by.

Herb loved his computer. In fact Jean would say she was a “computer widow” because of his long hours on it. He even had two computers, one upstairs and one downstairs.
Herb was fascinated by language as well. Right up to last year he was still trying to learn Spanish, French and German. Whether it was by books, tapes, or on the computer he still wanted to learn more. His other hobby was learning all he could about health. He loved gardening for many years. He and Jean loved to travel and went on a lot with other churches on trips as well. They even went to San Francisco to visit their son Will.

Many people liked Herb. He made many many friends. But his best friend was his wife Jean. He loved her very much and he gave the world to her, well as best he could anyways. He lived for Jean. Always there to help her out. He truly loved his wife. he deeply loved his son Herbert (Will).  He has a brother Robert and a sister Philippa in Nova Scotia and a sister Dorothy in Ontario, and his mother also took care of a boy Billy who they all loved as a brother as well.  He always loved to hear news about home in Nova Scotia especially how the nieces were doing and their families.
